I’m Barrie Smith, and I founded MOFchat.com for women just like you and me, who are feeling overwhelmed and emotional because our kids have left home for their freshman year of college.

Let me tell you a little bit of my story. Last year I dropped off my only child at school. He was going to college out of state, but it may as well have been on the moon-I felt like I was losing him and with him, a huge part of myself. When I said goodbye as he walked off to have dinner with his new friends from orientation that first night, I knew I wasn’t going to see him until Thanksgiving. I was devastated, panicky, and basically just felt like crying.

I had panic attacks all night and they continued when I got home. I didn’t know where to turn. I was lucky to have a few friends who were going through the experience at the same time, but as you know every kid and every school is different. I never felt so alone.

I tried not to call my son too much in those first days, and also not to call my friends every five minutes, but when I walked into his empty room and started to make up his bed for when he visited next, IN OVER TWO MONTHS, I realized I needed to take action.

I looked for a place where I could talk with other moms. I needed to connect with people who were going through the same thing. And more than that, I needed to be able to talk AT ANY TIME day or night. A web site was the perfect solution. It’s never too late to call, you can be completely anonymous, and you never have to worry about saying the wrong thing. There was no site that fulfilled all my needs, so I decided to create one.

MOFchat.com is a sounding board for you, a place where you can get advice from other women in your situation-single moms, empty nesters, working moms, moms of only children, moms of kids with special needs, and on and on. We’ll also have experts weigh in from the fields of finance, psychology, nutrition, and more. We’re looking forward to hearing about what you want and need and we’ll find the best people to help you through it.

Check out our list of forums. Everything is covered there-probably even situations you haven’t thought of yet, including postings from moms of kids who attend the same college as your child. And if it’s not there now, please add a forum. You, above all, are our experts. There is no more valuable source, and everyone who logs on to MOFchat.com wants to learn from you as you want to learn from them.

Above all, MOFchat.com will allow you to see that you are not alone. You can find each other now with the click of a mouse.

Welcome.
